Two fabrics with the same fibre composition can drape and perform differently because of their weave, weight, finish and applied treatments. Selection should therefore be based on the intended garment.
Intended use guides fabric decision
A business shirt may prioritise a clean appearance and easy care, while a casual shirt can use more texture and a relaxed silhouette.

Evaluate colour and surface on actual sample
There may be a difference between the colour on the screen and the actual fabric. Once the fabric orientation is determined, the appearance on the sample should be evaluated together with light, washing and other product components.
Confirm the material decision throughout the product
Fabric does not work in isolation from interlining, buttons, thread, labels, pattern and care instructions. These components must be verified together before approval.
Different fabric questions for business and linen shirts
For a cotton poplin business shirt, assess collar support, opacity and care requirements together. For a relaxed linen shirt, texture, fabric weight, body volume and post-wash measurements may be the main decisions. A fabric name alone does not guarantee quality or performance.
After approving a swatch colour, assess the same fabric in a physical sample under the intended care conditions. Use a physical colour reference rather than a screen image, and record the fabric batch approved for bulk production.
Read fabric information with correct questions
Cotton content is important, but it does not explain fabric performance on its own. Yarn construction, weave density, weight and finishing processes determine whether the shirt feels substantial, fluid, dry or soft.
A sourcing decision should consider not only how the fabric looks, but also how it performs under the intended wear and care conditions.

Test the fabric with other product components
Interfacing and stitch settings behave differently on lightweight and more substantial fabrics. Button thickness, thread colour, collar construction and garment ease all affect how the fabric is perceived.
A swatch card helps guide selection, but the bulk-production decision should be confirmed after the fabric has been assessed on an actual sample garment.
